Lest I Should Die Before I Live

The first difference you notice between a bang-up prison and an open prison are the bars.  That’s what first struck me on my arrival at Leyhill Open Prison in Gloucestershire.  The bars in a bang-up are on the outside of the windows – to keep prisoners in.  The bars in an open prison are on the inside of the windows – to keep the inmates out; out of the tobacco and pharmacy stores.
